Joseph Hardy, the founder of 84 Lumber and Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, passed away on January 7th, 2023 at the age of 100.
Hardy was born in 1922 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. He grew up working in his father's lumber business, and after serving in World War II, he returned home and took over the company. In 1956, he founded 84 Lumber, named after the highway exit in Uniontown where the first store was located.
Under Hardy's leadership, 84 Lumber grew into one of the largest privately-held building materials and services companies in the United States. In addition to selling lumber, the company also offers doors, windows, and other building materials, as well as design and construction services.
In the 1980s, Hardy purchased a 2,000-acre plot of land in Farmington, Pennsylvania, and transformed it into Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. The luxurious resort, which opened in 1987, features a championship golf course, a spa, and a variety of dining and entertainment options. It has become a popular destination for both business and leisure travelers.
Hardy was known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly his support for education. He established the Joseph Hardy Family Foundation, which provides scholarships to students in the Uniontown area.
Hardy is survived by his wife, Linda Hardy, and their five children. His legacy will live on through his successful business ventures and his contributions to the community.
